Today, the day of Arbaeen is the 40th day after the tragic incident in Karbala of Ashura.
The following text is a summary of what Arbaeen is.

Arba’een (Arabic: اربعين‎, means “forty”), or Chehlum, as it is known by Urdu-speaking Muslims, is a Shi’a religious holiday that occurs forty days after the Day of Ashurah, the commemoration of the martyrdom by beheading of Husayn bin Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad which falls on the 20th day of the month of Safar. Husayn and 72 supporters died in the Battle of Karbala in the year 61 AH (680 CE). Forty days is the usual length of the time of mourning in many Islamic cultures.

The occasion reminds the faithful of the core message behind Husayn’s martyrdom: establishing justice and fighting injustice, no matter what its incarnation — a message that strongly influenced subsequent Shi’a uprisings against the perceived tyranny of Umayyad and Abbasid rule.

In the first Arba’een gathering in the year 62 AH, Jabir ibn Abdullah, a companion of the Prophet, was one of the people who performed a pilgrimage to the burial site of Husayn. Due to his infirmity and probable blindness, he was accompanied by Atiyya bin Saad. His visit coincided with that of the surviving female members of the Prophet’s family and Husayn’s son and heir Ali, who had all been held captive in Damascus by Yazid I, the Umayyad Caliph. Ali ibn Husayn had been too ill to participate in the Battle of Karbala, but looked on from the sidelines.

The city of Karbala in Iraq, the third holy place of Shi’a Islam, is the center of the proceedings where, in a show of humility, many crawl through the streets of the city while others fall on their hands and knees as they approach the Shrines of Husayn and his brother Abbas ibn Ali.

Observance of Arba’een in Karbala was banned for many years when Saddam Hussein was president of Iraq. Following the 2003 invasion of Iraq, the observance in April 2003 was broadcast worldwide.[1]

Vista RTM & SP1 put to the Office Test February 27, 2008

Adrian Kingsley-hughes of ZDNet blogged a benchmarking test of bothe Vista RTM and SP1 when trying to run various tasks in Office 2007 Professional using scripts [from OfficeBench].

He used a pretty good computer with high specs:
 - Phenom 9700, Radeon 3850 graphics card, 2GB of RAM
which shows that the machine is not incapable of running Vista or Office.

The results are as follows:

Time to execute test scripts (sec) -No load Time to execute test scripts (sec) -Load
Vista RTM 265.83 271.06
Vista SP1 273.76 273.97

It seems as though SP1 has brought quite a significant slow down when using Office with no-load as there is an 8 second delay, but Adrian assures us that this will not affect the everyday user of Office. We also see that SP1 remians fairly consistent as it takes roughly 273 secs both times which isnt a bad thing.

So, for those of you who were scared SP1 may slow down your Office running times, dont worry and for those of you who had hoped for a better performance, tough luck.

N.B. In the second set of results for both RTM and SP1, the ‘load’ was just a small video running in the background by the script.

Hotmail/Windows Live Mail not working in UK February 26, 2008

Surprisingly, today the 26th of Feb, Hotmail ceased to work. I only discovered this as someone was frantically trying to get a document sent to themselves via email.

I searched online and found out that M$ is apparently upgrading it to Windows Live Mail 8.1 and therefore a lot of the services are down.

Windows Live Messenger seems to be working though so at least all is not at an end hehe

But on a serious note I feel that M$ should have warned us or at least sent out a message entailing why they have had to shut hotmail down etc…

 – UPDATE –

I guess that my original source of Information was wrong. The problem was caused to Windows LiveID failing meaning that the login process could not succeed.

ZDNet reported that people already logged into the system prior to the failure had difficulties logging out.

Also, the reason why it could not have been an update was due to M$ ‘rolling out’ upgrades meaning that they go through enthusiasts, avid beta users etc.. then finally on to the general public.

M$ seem to be working hard to get this under control, but seems a little slow to me :S

Rumors have it that due to Blu-Ray winning the HD War, M$ is looking to change its ways and now may be releasing a Blu-Ray Xbox 360.

Is seems as though M$ is close to launching a standalone Blu-Ray player that can be externally hooked up to the 360 Console and gamers can use that, but now they are planning to manufacture a built in player.

What does this mean you say?
Well it means that M$ can soon go Head to Head with Sony in the Console wars and also that there should be a significant rise in the price of the 360

M$ Cracking down on Cracks February 23, 2008

Well its only taken them a year to finally realize that their latest OS, Vista, has been cracked in a numerous amount of ways and are deciding to release an update which will cease all the machines running a cracked version of Vista.

However, they are only going to be stopping two cracks:

  1. “Grace Timer,” which extends Vista’s activation grace period, which is normally 30 days, until the year 2099.
  2. “OEM BIOS”, modifies system files and the PC’s BIOS to mimic the product activation done by computer-makers at the factory.

So for those of you out there working your illegitimate OS’s and using any of the above 2 cracks, then i suggest there’s a little panicking to do. Although sooner or later some nerd out there will find a way to crack Vista, even with SP1 and this latest update – w00t – i would think

— UPDATE —

I mentioned before that the update would cripple your machines, I was wrong!!

KezNews.com reports:

“February’s Vista update, however, will only detect cracks, notify the user and offer up a solution, said Alex Kochis, senior product manager for Microsoft’s Windows Genuine Advantage program, in a post to the team’s blog. It will not disable, block or cripple the cracks.”

I recently spoke to a friend who has an 8Gb iPhone and a 16Gb iPhone is Sweden and purchased them for 5000:- [8Gb] and 6000:- [16Gb]. These roughly converted to about £403.69 [8Gb] and £484.42[16Gb]

Then i checked our prices in the UK and found that the 8Gb for 3000 Mins and 500 Texts was £269.00 and 16Gb with same mins and texts for £329.00.

Boy did the Swedes get RIPPED OFF! =P

Windows Vista SP1 – I have it =] February 22, 2008

As many of you ‘may’ know, Microsoft has been working on the latest service pack [SP1] for its latest OS [Vista].

This seems to be a highly anticipated update as it includes many bug fixes and minor UI improvements but most of all has changed its Kernel to that of Server 2008 rather than the standing Server 2003 Kernel. Now I’m not exactly sure how much of a difference this is [as i dont know the kernel well - no-one really does] but the next main improvement is that the transferring of files has been improved greatly.

There have been problems reported of beta testers having to reinstall some drivers after the installation of SP1 RC and therefore since the RTM was made ready on February 4th 2008, Microsoft said they would release the update publicly in Mid-March 08.

However, I have managed to find a way around getting the RTM version of the SP and although I am still waiting to see the differences, it feels good to know I have the latest and supposedly greatest version of Vista so far =]

Comment if you would like to know how =P
